Drama Consultant/Teacher/Director

                                            Giving Students Voice and Choice
In addition to her professional directing work, Carol is a National Board Certified Teacher and has taught drama at every level, including college. As an original member of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Elementary Theatre Program, she co-wrote the standards-based foundational skills curriculum in use since 1999.  Her lessons represent true arts integration, coupling theatre with Language Arts and/or History. A recognized expert in drama education, Carol's been a guest on several NPR programs.
Her work with LAUSD earned her two prestigious Bravo Award honors. In addition, she’s directed countless original productions and revived the Living Theatre style of playwriting with upper grade elementary, middle and high school students. Choosing a contemporary issue, Carol guides them through the process of melding research and current resources to create original theatre pieces.
She’s taught professional development workshops for both classroom and theatre teachers, and leads 3-5 day workshops for professional development credit that guides teachers through her Living Theatre template.

Artist-in-Residencies

Carol is available to teach Artist-in-Residencies for Kinder-6th grade, school-wide prof. development in the Elements of Theatre for the Classroom Teacher, and Living Theatre workshops for upper elementary, middle and high school teachers.

What teachers/administrators say:

"Carol's professional development on How to Develop Living Newspaper plays was so engaging and instructive. I was able to follow her blueprint to guide beginning theatre students in developing an original production about the impact of gun violence in schools. They were so proud of their work, as was I.”

"
Carol took the lead in creating the ground-breaking K-6 drama curriculum, which has immeasurably strengthened the arts programs in our schools for 24 years. I’ve observed her working with students and teachers many times and have been dazzled by her skill.

English Language Learners

Carol created a data-driven demonstration project for LAUSD's Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade EL learners. In only eight drama lessons (plus a relevant journal prompt), ELL students gained an average of one level for oral development and a surprising two levels in written development, as compared to a control group in a similar school population with no drama lessons.

"Carol’s work with English language learners is targeted language instruction that works! I’ve worked successfully with 'Ms. Carol' in kinder and 6th. In each grade, students have produced writing and performances that integrate ELA, literature, and ELD. It's always a joy!
Marvilla B, kindergarten/6th grade teacher

"Carol has a special gift for bringing the magic of theatrical expression to life with students of all ages and engaging even the most reluctant child."
David F., 4th/5th grade (gifted) teacher
